Have you ever locked your keys in your car and needed a locksmith service immediately? Choosing a reputable locksmith service before the emergency is key.

There comes a time when most people require the services of a locksmith. Locksmiths perform a variety of duties including key cutting, getting keys out of locked vehicles, repairing locks and fitting new locks. Some locksmith companies also handle home security. Home security systems consist of alarms, motion lighting, security bars, security grills and camera systems. Before contacting a locksmith, it is important to follow a few guidelines when choosing the best services for your money. Con-artists and untrustworthy locksmiths can charge anywhere from $300 or more for a simple job that should cost less than $100 because most people that call a locksmith at odd hours are desperate. The best way to approach which locksmith to use is research ahead of time and write down several names and numbers to carry in your wallet for those emergency situations.

Where to Find A Locksmith

Find a local locksmith in your region's yellow pages or on the internet. Always look up the locksmith's name on the Better Business Bureau's website or call them to find out if the service has noted suspicious activity or has had claims against them. Even though a locksmith may have a clean record on the Better Business Bureau, do not stop here. The company may be relatively new or just have not received recorded claims. Consider checking the Consumer Checkbook. This service comes in book form or on the internet. This book attempts to keep an updated list of reputable locksmith services. Conduct a general internet search using the locksmith's name. On occasion, complaints or suits filed against companies show up during a simple search. Ask someone you trust. Contact a local city office or ask friends and family what services they recommend. Many reputable locksmiths belong to state or national organizations such as the Associated Locksmiths of America.

Qualifications of a Good Locksmith

Certified locksmiths are required by law to be licensed. The license should be posted in any advertising material and the locksmith is required to carry a copy of this license at all times. Request to see a copy of the license upon arrival. If a locksmith does not have a license, don't pay them. A locksmith company that charges over $500 must also obtain a contractor's license. Check your local Department of Consumer Affairs for contracting information. Ask your contractor if they have insurance. You do not want to be put into the position of paying for damage due to a mistake the contractor makes. Always consider the availability of the locksmith you choose. If the locksmith company has a 24-hour number it is likely you will receive service when you need it.
